Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the E&C manager, the GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER is responsible for the planning, organizing and implementation of geotechnical activities throughout the different stages of hydropower project development. The principal duties within this role include gathering, interpretation, and utilization of geotechnical data; interfacing with other project specialists, designers, and contractors to assess geotechnical risks, to interpret existing on site conditions and to effectively manage and execute project task and deliverables to high level of quality.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Define project geotechnical scope or approach, and establish geotechnical programme of studies and investigations throughout the different stages of project development.
2. Provide support in project scoping, design and bids, taking into account the planning, design and costing of hydropower project development.
3. Interface with other development and/or construction project team members in the execution of the geotechnical portion of projects.
4. Make site visits, collect field data and safely move around Greenfield sites or in and around operating facilities.
5. Potential site investigations and interpreting ground investigations; geological and geo-morphological mapping; hazard mapping; detailed soil and rock logging; ground work investigations and sampling; coordination of laboratory testing.
6. Prepare reports, drawings and specifications for foundations, earth retention systems, slopes and embankments, tunnels, pipelines and weir structures; including construction oversight and construction-support services.
7. Define geotechnical and foundation design criteria and assumptions, producing design solutions and drawings, covering a range of hydropower project requirements and coordinating directly with the civil or structural design engineers.
8. Ensure that the geotechnical aspects of the design are correctly implemented including geo-environmental desk study reports in order to identify potential geotechnical hazards.
9. Participate in clarification meetings and respond to the contractors needs with respect to geotechnical queries and constructability/programme driver design changes.
10. Construction supervision for geotechnical works including large scale earthworks, piling, soil nailing, rock bolting and tunneling (including assessment of required temporary and permanent support requirements).
11. Manage, document and follow procedures for engineering management including quality control, documentation of decisions and administrative filing and document control.
12. Ensure that the geological and geotechnical activities are being carried out in accordance with policies and guidance established including Health, Safety, Environment and Social policies.
13. Perform any related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time by immediate superior consistent with the purpose of this role.
